What Is Gluten Cross-Reactivity?

What Is Gluten Cross-Reactivity? | Phoenix Helix

“I pretty much try to stay in a constant state of confusion just because of the expression it leaves on my face.” ~ Johnny Depp

The Theory

Since many people with celiac disease continue to feel sick, even when they eliminate gluten from their diet, scientists have been looking for the reason why. One theory is cross-reactivity. What does that mean? When your body develops an allergy to gluten, it creates antibodies that remember gluten’s protein structure. If you eat gluten, those antibodies set off an inflammatory response. Some other foods have similar protein structures to gluten, and you may react to those as if they were gluten. It’s basically a case of mistaken identify. It’s important to note, however, that cross-reactivity isn’t something that happens to everyone. And very few people cross-react to all of the potential foods. It’s simply something to explore when giving up gluten isn’t enough. Continue reading

Meeting Online Paleo Friends in Real Life

Meeting Online Paleo Friends in Real Life | Phoenix Helix

“People are medicine.” ~ Dallas Hartwig

Finding My Tribe

I don’t know about you, but I live in a small town and the paleo diet isn’t exactly popular here. I have a few friends and acquaintances who dabble in paleo 80/20 style, but I’m the only one who follows a healing diet 100% of the time. So, like many of you, my paleo support network is online, made up of bloggers, readers, and a global community of people walking the same path as me. I don’t think I could have done this alone! Whether it’s sharing recipes, empathy, humor or encouragement, we lift each other up and keep each other going. This is where the internet is an enormous blessing. Yet there’s something special about face-to-face friendships. This year, I got to meet some of my online paleo friends in person. I wondered if I really knew them through our years of internet conversation. You hear so much about people putting their fantasy selves online. However, I don’t think that happens as often in the autoimmune community, at least not in my circle. None of us are interested in sugarcoating the journey. Relationships only deepen when we keep it real. When I met them in person, I felt like I’d known them for years (which I had), but it went from 2-D to 3-D. Continue reading

The Paleo AIP Instant Pot Cookbook Review, Recipe and Giveaway!

The Paleo AIP Instant Pot Cookbook Review, Sample Recipe & Giveaway | Phoenix Helix“How did it get so late so soon?.” ~ Dr. Seuss

My Favorite Kitchen Appliance

When we’re on a healing diet, we spend a LOT of time cooking. Anything that saves us  time in the kitchen is a lifesaver. I fell in love with my Instant Pot when I first made 24-hour gut-healing bone broth in just two hours. If I never cooked anything else, the pot would have been worth the price. But I wanted to use my Instant Pot for much, much more. That’s how this e-cookbook idea was born. I invited 36 other paleo AIP bloggers to develop recipes for our favorite appliance, and the results surpassed all expectations. We created a cookbook no one person could have made on their own: 141 recipes – everything from broth to veggies to main courses and desserts – and they’re not only delicious but FAST! Episode 53: The Food as Medicine Documentary

Episode 53 of the Phoenix Helix Podcast: The Food As Medicine Documentary

Using the Power of Film to Change the Definition of Medicine

Each and every one of us in the healing diet community is part of a grassroots movement, changing the way we treat chronic illness. When we see the connection between the choices we make and how we feel, we’re no longer victims to our illness but rather partners in our healing. This documentary is sharing this information with the masses.

Lenore and Mark Eklund both have careers in film and actually met working at FOX animation. When Lenore found that her Crohn’s disease medication made her feel worse instead of better, her husband encouraged her to try the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD). The results were so dramatic that it inspired this film. However, the documentary isn’t about her personal journey. Instead, it follows the lives of three people just beginning to embark on a healing diet. One tries the paleo autoimmune protocol, one tries SCD, and another tries 80/20 paleo. We see the dramatic positive impact these dietary changes have, but also the great challenges they face as they try to eat healthily in today’s food culture. As we all know, it’s not easy.

“I have come to believe over and over again that what is most important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared.”
~ Audre Lorde

Update ~ the Giveaway has Ended

The winners were chosen with a random number generator on 8/27/2016. Congratulations to Tonya, Amanda, Janice, Anne and Lorraine! If you didn’t win, don’t despair. You can buy a copy of the audiobook through Amazon.com, Audible.com or iTunes.

Why An Audiobook?

It was actually my husband‘s idea. He mentioned that audiobooks are the fastest growing segment of the book market. As a life-long reader, I was surprised at first, but then I thought about it a little more. The truth is – life’s busy, and multi-tasking is one of the ways we handle it. Sitting down with a book takes dedicated time, but we can listen to audiobooks while we run errands, clean the house, commute to work, chauffeur the kids, take the dog for a walk, prepare dinner….the list goes on. This is one of the reasons I love podcasts, and being a podcast host also inspired this audiobook. I like having conversations with this community, and I actually wrote my book like a conversation between friends. Why not actually record that conversation? Continue reading

Episode 48: Medication Decisions

Episode 48 of the Phoenix Helix Podcast: Medication Decisions

Deciding Whether or Not to Take Autoimmune Medication

This is a decision we are all faced with and it’s rarely an easy one. Not only that, but our decision might change over the course of our illness. This podcast was inspired by my recent decision to start medication after 4 years on the paleo autoimmune protocol. Today, I share the reasons behind my decision and also interview 5 other people about their medication choices. My guests have a wide range of diagnoses and experiences. Some have always taken medication, some have never taken medication, and some have gone on or off medication, based on changes in how they feel. The important thing to know is that there is no one right choice for everyone. My goal with this podcast episode isn’t to provide answers, but just to highlight the complexity of this decision, and let us all know that we’re not alone.

To be clear – this show isn’t designed to be medical advice. Definitely work with your doctors when deciding what choice is best for you.
