A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol

As most of you know, I published my first print paleo book on January 1st: A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol. The response has been overwhelming. When you write a book, you put your heart and soul into it, hoping it will resonate with others, but you never know until it’s out in the world. I’m both humbled and honored by what people have said. Here’s a review roundup.

Testimonials from Paleo Leaders

“My mother, mother-in-law and myself all had autoimmune disease, which is why I’ve been trying to educate people about the power of the Paleo AIP for decades. It’s personal. This book is the ultimate get-started guide in an easy-to-read package. Leave your excuses at the curb, buy this book and change your life today.” ~ Robb Wolf, New York Times Bestselling author of The Paleo Solution

A Simple Guide to the Autoimmune Protocol delivers on its promise by presenting the dos and dont’s of the AIP while focusing on practical implementation rather than complex science….It’s the perfect tool for anyone who wants to learn about and get started on the AIP as quickly and painlessly as possible.” ~ Sarah Ballantyne, PhD, New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Approach, The Paleo Approach Cookbook, and The Healing Kitchen

Testimonials from Healthcare Practitioners

With her new book, Eileen provides an easy to understand and dare I say fun approach to AIP….I can’t wait to share this book with my clients, students and fellow practitioners!” ~ Andrea Nakayama, Educator and Functional Nutritionist

“There is growing scientific evidence behind how the AIP works, but the layperson doesn’t need to understand complex science in order to get started. That is what I love about this book – it is a practical, real-world resource for navigating the AIP. I plan to use this book as a patient education tool.” ~ Katy Haldiman, Registered Nurse, Certified Nutritional Therapist and Herbalist

“I wish I had this book when I first started exploring the Autoimmune Protocol to help manage my Hashimoto’s! Reviews from Paleo AIP Bloggers

“I cannot recommend A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol enough. It’s the perfect introduction to the AIP, as it guides you through the most simple, practical approach to the protocol. It will walk you through everything you can expect in the process and set you up for the best possible chance of success.” ~ Rachael Bryant, Meatified

“This book is comprehensive but concise, which is not an easy balance to strike! It covers every aspect of healing from eliminating foods and why, to finding support, to dealing with flares, to circadian rhythms, and how to appropriately detox…that is a ton of material! But each section lays out the applicable nuts and bolts in a perfectly understandable, straightforward way and then moves on! No fancy science words, no unnecessary fluff, just the facts and what to do about them.” ~ Samantha Beth McClellan, AIP Sisterhood

“It is written so that even someone who is very ill, perhaps even suffering from ‘brain fog,’ will be able to understand without too much effort. But at the same time it doesn’t talk down to you, which I really appreciate! That’s a tough balance to achieve, but somehow Eileen does it.” ~ Jaime Hartman, Gutsy by Nature

“Reading this book gives me a cosy feeling, just like having a conversation with someone dear who cares about me.” ~ Maria Krummen, Zesty Paleo

“With the rapid growth of the autoimmune movement and availability of information, it is vitally important to be able to trust the source of your advice. Eileen is one of the most informed advocates of the AIP that I know of, in fact she was one of the original bloggers on the subject so you can rest assured her advice is 100% accurate.” ~ Kate Jay, Healing Family Eats

“I have been considering the AIP Paleo protocol for a while now, probably well over a year…I have bought multiple books and have started to read some but never finished. For whatever reason and multiple excuses including feeling ill, I have put it off…Then I came across the book: A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol by Eileen Laird. I read this book in a day! It breaks down the AIP into it’s simplest form and outlines the do’s and don’ts for you.” ~ Jacquie, Gut-Wrenching Truth About Crohns

“I could pout and say, “No fair! I wish there was an ‘AIP for Dummies’ book like this when I started out!”, but the good news is YOU have that tool now. So, use it.” ~ Erin, Real Food & Love

“If you are familiar with Eileen’s podcast Phoenix Helix, you will know the encouraging attitude she always delivery to her audience. Written in her signature positive tone as in her podcast, this book will leave you reassured and encouraged to take on this transition.” ~ Astrid Fox, Heal Me in the Kitchen

“These days, there is a wealth of information on the Autoimmune Protocol, but sometimes that can cause analysis paralysis when confronted with all of the gritty details. Enter A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol….Everything you should know before you begin is included, making this an ideal read for anyone about to start the process.” ~ Mickey Trescott, Autoimmune Wellness

“My favourite things about this book: 1) Eileen creates a voice that is conversational, understanding, and balanced. Reading her book is like having a chat with a trusted and wise friend. 2) The information is accessible – not heavy in arcane science and able to be read within a single day! 3) The chapters are comprehensive, working the reader through the basics of what to eat and not eat on the AIP as well as addressing many important lifestyle factors that can impact on symptomatology.” ~ Martine Partridge, Eat Heal Thrive

“Ready to start AIP? A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol has you covered! ….Already on AIP? This book still has a lot to offer. It’s a great little resource to double check questions that do pop up every once in awhile….I also think this book is perfect for family and friends who want to know more about AIP in order to support you.” ~ Rebecca Boucher, Lichen Paleo Loving AIP

“It can be tough when you’re new to the AIP, and it helps to have a guide to explain what pitfalls to look out for and avoid. And that’s exactly what this book is great for.” ~ Louise Hendon, Healing Autoimmune

“Many times, I believe we are our worst enemies. We allow the voices in our heads and fear to sabotage our efforts. Eileen’s chapter on Overcoming Self-Sabotage will give you actionable tips you can use to overcome those nasty saboteurs.” ~ Tara Perillo, Paleo Cajun Lady

“Eileen’s book is a resource dedicated to anyone whose autoimmune disease knocked them down so hard, they wondered if they would ever rise again.” ~ Gabriella Schneider, Beyond the Bite

Feedback from Readers with Autoimmune Disease

“I began following Eileen’s website not long after following the AIP and frequently reference her articles. I found them to be so positive and compassionate. This book mirrors that tone, and I will carry it with me everywhere so that anytime I have a weak moment or need a positive affirmation to keep me on track, I can reference it.” ~ Lizzie

“This book is organizational genius. With bullet lists and boldface, Eileen brings the critical information into focus for the foggy brain. The chapters begin with the non-negotiables: the foods to avoid. From there, it’s a slow progression through strategies for what to eat, what to do, and how to cope, from basic principles to advanced troubleshooting. Every puzzle piece is there.” ~ Meghan

“I got the book last week and this morning gave it to a friend just diagnosed with RA. I’m buying another one or two – it was so nice just to hand her something that I knew could help her. To have a simple guide to start the process will, I hope, make the change to the Autoimmune Protocol so much easier!” ~ Gail

“Eileen has a marvelous gift of taking complicated concepts and making them clear to the reader. I felt like I was sitting with a good friend who gently pointed me in the right direction and gave me a simple guide that is worth its weight in gold.” ~ Sunny

“Many people who are considering AIP are consumed by pain, fatigue, and brain fog. It’s difficult in that condition to get through each day, let alone take the steps of research, planning and preparation needed to start feeling better. This book makes it simple.” ~ Alison

“This book is exactly what I need. Both my daughter and I have autoimmune disorders, and I’ve been searching for convenient information that doesn’t require weeks of reading. There is SO much information out there about AIP, it’s difficult to condense it all into a usable format. I’ve been following Eileen for awhile, and this is her best yet. I can carry this with me in my purse, and easily check to make sure I’m on track. I’d highly recommend this book to anyone who has an autoimmune disorder that wants to get their health back.” ~ Annette

“WOW! This small book can be easily tucked within your purse or backpack, but don’t let its size mislead you. It contains EVERYthing you need to know about the AIP.” ~ D. Paige

“Being new to AIP, I’ve bought a number of cookbooks. They are beautiful books with great recipes, but none tell me how to manage everyday life outside of my own home on the plan. Eileen Laird has done that in a simple, clear and concise way. Her book has prepared me to eat at restaurants, travel out of town, handle social settings and navigate family gatherings all while staying AIP compliant.” ~ Amy

“The simplicity of style makes this easy reading for anyone whose first language isn’t English, and it’s perfect to share with friends and family that want to understand your new diet.” ~ Stella

“Reading Eileen Laird’s Simple Guide to the AIP is like sitting down with your closest and wisest friend, who is giving you a pep talk backed up with all the facts you need to stop your disease process and enjoy living life again.” ~ Emily

  1. US giveaway-would love the Wild Zora bars, sound delicious!
I’ve gone Paleo now for 2 months, but experimenting with the AIP. This book would be a great resource for me to learn more. I’ve stopped eating eggs already for a bit, and know that if I overdo nuts, I feel sick. Wanting healthy, steady energy and to say goodbye to those old sugar cravings! (Paleo has already helped tremendously with this)

  2. U.S. Wild zora
I have been air for 2 years but after my baby have been going backwards in my health. Would love more recipes!

  3. International giveaway – Turkey

I relapsed this past winter. Was in bed 16-18 hour a day. Before that I dealt with debilitating migraines and signs of adrenal fatigue (for af see lifestyle chsnge). Somewhere along the lone I alone developed IBS. I was a mess.

AIP + low FODMAP + lifestyle change I am back on my feet.

  4. 1- US entry.
2 – power balls! Once i finish this contest I’m heading to their website to see if I can make something similar. I need some treats in my AIP life.
3 – I’m hoping AIP keeps my ulcerative colitis in remission and eases my endometriosis and hormone issues. I’ve been SCD for 7 years and now 41 days into AIP. Yes I’m still counting. Can’t wait till I can reintroduce eggs so I can bake!
4- I know there wasn’t a 4 but I feel the need to say… I hope I win a book! Your podcasts have been keeping me going. I’m a biology teacher so I love the science behind your talks and all of your guests. I’m happy I found the podcast and have even tweeted about it helping to keep me sane. Looked you up on Twitter but can’t find you. Are you there? Anyway, I’ve had an event in my calendar for weeks to “Buy AIP book” with the link to your site. But these 41 days have wiped me at the no insurance doc office so I keep pushing it back in my calendar. Either way, in a few months I’ll probably buy the book.

    Wishing you all the best!

  5. I’m entering from the U.S. and hope to receive the Wild Zora bars. If Eileen hadn’t told us about them, I don’t think I would have tried them – and they are delicious!
The AIP has lowered my joint pain and bloating and increased my energy level so far (rheumatoid arthritis).

  6. I’m International.
I have been AIP only 3 months, but have lost 35 lbs. I haven’t gotten sick with a Flu, cold or any other illness since the switch; since last winter I was on antibiotics 3 times by February. I haven’t had to use midol for my monthly cramps; but I used to dye in pain before. My bowels are starting to become more “normal” and I’m learning to listen to my body (which is VERY exciting)!

  7. US. Wild Zora bars. I’ve been Paleo for 2 years and am easing into AIP. I’ve cut out nightshades and milk, and within two weeks my joints no longer ached every day all day. Yey! Am going to eliminate eggs and nuts next, hopefully some weight will start to come off too.

  8. I’m entering the US and would love to try the Wild Zora bars. I have only been on the AIP diet for 3 weeks, and I have already noticed some improvements. My brain fog is so much better, and I’m slowly getting more energy. I have Hashimotos, chronic fatigue, and fibromyalgia. I’m hoping as I continue I will have more energy to keep up with my 2 and 3 year old boys!

  9. Internacional entering here (greetings from Spain!)

Last year AIP helped me really recover from most of my symptoms (undiagnosed autoimmune condition, though gluten sensitivity is really obvious). Paleo helped with the GI problems and energy levels, but it wasn’t until I started AIP that brain fog lifted and my body began to function properly. I messed up with reintroductions 🙁 so full AIP again since mid January. I’m hoping it will help with my gut healing, and some skin conditions, and I’m not in a hurry now, learned from my mistake!

Thanks for the chance of getting your books!!!

  10. I am in the US and I would love to win the Wild Zora bars.

I have been sitting on the fence about doing a true test of AIP and would like to see a simple guide. I have 3 autoimmune diagnoses and experience some form of joint pain daily.

  11. I am entering the US contest. I would prefer the Paleo power balls as I am not sure how the Wild Zora product would taste (which means I probably should do that one!). I am hoping AIP will help with my several autoimmune issues. I just need to “get out of my own head” and stop fighting it 🙁

  12. In the US and would love to win the wild zora bars! Just got your Simple Guide book actually and have started reading it – excited to implement your strategies and change the way I eat.

  13. I’m entering the US Giveaway and would love to try the Wild Zora product. I’ve been following the AIP diet (with a few re-introductions) for almost 2 years. With it I was able to totally reverse the symptoms of ulcerative colitis and reduce symptoms of GPA (granulomatosis with polyangiitis). Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the help & hope you give to autoimmune sufferers.

  14. Hi! I am entering from the US. I would love the paleo balls. I am interested in AIP to help heal my Hashimoto’s.
    Thanks!

  15. I am entering the International giveaway. AIP has changed my life completely, I had IBS, hives and angiodema and after a year on the protocol I’ve lost weight, the flares have subsided, I’ve managed to reintroduce some foods and I feel great! Thanks Eileen for all the work you do to help people on this path.

  16. Patricia Brubaker

    Hi Eileen,
Congratulations on your book. I would love to win it.
I’m in the US and would like to try the Wild Zora.
I was doing well on AIP for several months, but “fell off the wagon” even tho I know I feel better with AIP. Hope your book will help get me back on track.

  17. Jamie Marie Bulaich

    1. US Give Away 2. Angel Balls 3. AIP has helped me get off of gnarly medications for Ulcertive Collitis and Rheumatiod Arthritis. Healing my intestines has been the best thing I have ever done. AIP protocol has changed my life to the point where I feel minimal pain, I am happy, and I feel healthy.

  18. I’m entering the US giveaway. I’d love to win the power balls. I am currently getting tested for Hashimotos. However, this year I have lost 150+ lbs via diet and excercise. After losing this weight my hormones feel messed up and I’m more connected to my wellness. My stomach is never the same and I want to break it all down and for my health to be optimum. I currently take synthroid for hypothyroidism and never even read about it or looked into how my thyroid function played into my whole health. I’m hoping to start the AIP and figure out what’s going on with my stomach and be the most healthy pure version of myself I can be. Cheers, thank you.

  19. I’m entering the US giveaway, and I’d love to try the power balls! I’m just getting started on my AIP journey, and so appreciate the community feel I keep running into. Thank you so much for the opportunity!

  20. I’m entering the contest from Canada…I need to begin the AIP to try to put my autoimmune disease in remission but don’t know how to begin…I follow your website as well as a few others but need a starting point.

  21. I’m entering the US giveaway and I’d love to win the Wild Zora bars! I absolutely love them! And the owners. 🙂 AIP has given me more freedom than I had before. I used to spend 4-6 months a years completely disabled and in bed. My flares are further apart now, and not as long as they once were. I also have the tools to help me through them. I can work again part time, and I have a better quality of life. I hope and pray for continued improvement. Thank you for this opportunity, as well as your blog and books!! You are a huge help to so many. xoxox

  22. Teofilo Hernandez

I’m from the US and would like to win the Paleo Angel Balls. The lamb bar sounds great, but I’m allergic to celery and garlic (among other stuff).

  23. I’m entering the U.S. Giveaway. I would love love love to win Paleo Angel’s Power Balls, they area absolutely amazing! I stumbled upon the AIP just in September of 2015, after I was diagnosed with seronegative spondyloarthropathy (what? yes, that’s what my reaction was. Supercalifragalisticexpialidocious). I’ve also had Ulcerative Colitis since I was 23 years old. AIP has introduced me to a lot of new foods and made me become much much more aware of what I put in my body. It has reduced my pain drastically. I still have some interesting issues and inflammation that I’m trying to fine tune, but nothing like the pain I had in August last year. By researching AIP, I was also able to find your podcasts and information, which have been GOLDEN and so nice to read and listen to. Thank you for doing all this. AIP is a life changer for sure. 🙂

  24. Josef Schneeberger

Thanks a lot for your work, Eileen!
    Greetings from Austria!

How has the AIP changed your life, or how do you hope to have it change your life? – Having been on Paleo before, I KNOW it can help me, but my biggest hopes are losing some fat and bloating, and reclaiming myself from psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, eczema, and maybe even my bursitis. 66. I’m entering in the US! I think I’d like the paleo balls but both sound interesting. When I first started AIP I was able to go for 80 days without slipping up or reintroducing anything. In that time my symptoms from my Primary Biliary Cirrhosis nearly disappeared (all the remained was very very minimal itching once in awhile). Before AIP I would be up half the night scratching at myself because my pruritus was so bad.
The reduction in symptoms wasn’t the only change however. My skin cleared up, my vertigo pretty much went away, my mental attitude was markedly improved, and I lost 40 pounds. Since then I’ve struggled a bit to stay the course, the holidays threw me way off. But I’m back on track and feeling much better. These days the change between eating strict AIP and not is noticeable within the first day of making the switch. It’s insane how much this diet has helped me feel better.
PS. Love your breakfast sausage recipe!

  67. I am in the U.S. and hope to win the Paleo Angel balls. I just started AIP last week hoping it will help with my psoriatic arthritis. Thank you so much.

  68. Hello….

I couldn’t even form thoughts in order to read a 2nd graders book! Thankfully the brain fog has gotten better & I hope the energy & aches will be next!
