Introduction to Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

What is EFT?

Today, I’d like to introduce you to the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Have you heard of it? Many functional medicine practitioners incorporate this into their care. EFT is a psychological acupressure technique that combines the physical tapping of specific points on your body with verbal affirmations. The goal is to clear emotional blocks from your body, bringing your mind and body into balance, thereby releasing blocks to healing. Here’s a video with a quick demonstration:


Does that seem a little “out there” to you? I’ll be honest. When I first saw the technique demonstrated, I was skeptical. However, a growing body of research supports its effectiveness, and when I tried the technique myself, I did feel better. Maybe those of us who are skeptical need to try it, most of all.


How Does It Work?

Gary Craig, the founder of EFT, describes it in terms of energy. The tapping stimulates the same meridians that have been used in acupuncture for thousands of years. If we see ourselves as energetic beings, both physical and emotional trauma can disrupt our energy field. EFT is designed to realign that field and release those blocks, and in doing so, heal our mind and body at the same time.

Others believe EFT is cognitive restructuring. By combining emotional recall with verbal affirmations and physical stimulation, we change the way our brain experiences that emotion, effectively reducing its intensity and its negative effect on our body.

Sample Scripts

The script always begins with the phrase, “Even though (insert problem here),” and ends with the phrase, “I completely love and accept myself.” Avoid the temptation to change this ending phrase. It has proven to be the most effective. The following scripts are simply samples. You’ll want to personalize them for you.

  • “Even though I’m experiencing a flare, I completely love and accept myself.”
  • “Even though I’m exhausted, and I’m tired of being exhausted, I completely love and accept myself.”
  • “Even though I’m worried that I will never be well, I completely love and accept myself.”
  • “Even though I’m in a lot of pain, I completely love and accept myself.”
  • “Even though my rash looks worse today, I completely love and accept myself.”
  • “Even though I’m furious that I got glutened, I completely love and accept myself.”
  • “Even though I made some choices today I regret, I completely love and accept myself.”
  • “Even though I can’t stop crying today, I completely love and accept myself.
  • “Even though my anxiety is keeping me awake at night, I completely love and accept myself.”
  • “Even though I feel overwhelmed by my life right now, I completely love and accept myself.”

EFT Tips

  • Be honest with yourself, and say what you really think and feel. We are trained to not indulge in negative thinking, so reading through those scripts can be a little overwhelming. But EFT is about acknowledging our feelings and releasing their power over us. It’s a way to transform negative thinking. So, be honest, and let go of the judgmental voice within.
  • Make your scripts as specific and personalized as possible.
  • Really feel it, when you say it, and rate the intensity of the feeling on a scale of 1 to 10.
  • Really feel the affirmation as well. If you don’t believe the affirmation, say it like you do. It still has power.
  • Say the statements out loud.
  • At the end of the tapping sequence, tune into the feeling again. Has it lessened at all? If yes, smile, it worked! If not, repeat the sequence again a second or third time.
  • If is still hasn’t lessened after a third round, try to get more specific with your statement, and try to tune into your feelings more closely as you tap.
  • EFT is most effective cumulatively; it’s like peeling layers of an onion. So do EFT throughout the day.
  • One of the most effective times to do EFT is right before you go to bed. It gives your subconscious the whole night to absorb the message.
  • Your subconscious mind is very literal, so always keep your statements in the present tense. Otherwise, you’re telling your conscious mind to postpone healing into the future.

    This is such a great post! Thank you for sharing. I’m so interested in all forms of holistic healing! I do believe EFT works. I do pressure points on my face and neck to relieve sinus pressure. Message is such a great way to relieve stress. I can see how the tapping is effective along with the positive affirmations. I do a lot of work with highly depressed and suicidal patients. Changing negative self talk is critical. Not everyone is ready to believe the positive affirmations they say to themselves, but I believe that if they are said enough, it will start to become more automatic (and replace the automatic negative thoughts that are on default setting). I’m such a fan of affirmations. They elicit an instant positive charge. I am going to personally use this technique and will bring it to my therapy groups! Awesome stuff, Eileen!


  2. I became interested in EFT for releasing emotions from the past, but I didn’t realize it can be helpful with autoimmune healing protocol. I actually bought a book awhile back and I haven’t touched it because I’m skeptical. So thank you for this post! I think I might finally crack it open.

  4. I used EFT about 18 yrs. ago. A wonderful counselor taught me this while I recovered from agoraphobia/panic disorder. This time of year tends to be very stressful for everyone and EFT definitely helps me get centered, focused and in a positive mind frame. Thank you for the post.
